Life was so dark in Sacramento, a coffee grower village of Foundation, in the department of Magdalena, which by 2003 had become a ghost town. Since the 70s, there paramilitary groups I consolidated to protect some landowners in the 80s there were guerrilla presence, but in the 90s, the population was in the midst of fighting the  Northern Bloc of the United Self - Defense of Colombia (AUC) , led by Jorge 40, against men  Tayrona Resistance Bloc  commanded Hernán Giraldo. The displacement was massive to threats of fighting and frequency of targeted killings.

In memory of the inhabitants of that region is still occurred between December 2001 and February 2002. During that period, according to figures from  Social Action of the Presidency of the Republic , 1,700 families were compellest move to be used as human shields by the troops of Hernan Giraldo.

Sacramento was a territory dispute. It was strategic because it became a natural corridor that connects the Magdalena department of Cesar. It was a way to get marijuana from the  'Bonanza marimbera' , and then became a warehouse to hide narcotics, weapons and contraband.

Nothing achievement prevent the exodus. Or be part of the highest coastal mountain in the world, nor be declared by UNESCO in 1979 as a Biosphere Reserve, they were sufficient to address the humanitarian needs of the population.
The majestic Sierra Nevada , the unattainable goal of the Corográfica Commission, the frustrated dream of Agustin Codazzi, ranked third in the ranks of ejectors territories of people in the country. Only surpassed by Urabá and Montes de Maria, concluded the National Center of Historical Memory "A displaced nation. National Report of forced displacement in Colombia , "published in 2015.

Dagoberto Quintero is the legal representative of the  Association of Producers of Sacramento (Asoprodesa) , which was created in 2013 with the mission to support coffee growers and beekeepers. Both his family, and 196 more were victims of forced displacement in the 90s, especially by the paramilitary expansion. They began to return from exile in 2006, when the Tayrona Resistance Front and the Northern Bloc of the AUC, was beginning to demobilize by the entry into force of the Law of Justice and Peace.

Without legal guarantees, they returned to his people under the guise of voluntary return and as they climbed noticed that the landscape had changed: the coffee plantations were dry and the disappearance of trees was evident, almost no Vainillo and neither had much cedar. They usufructuaron paramilitaries and did not care coffee crop, and also devoted themselves to knock down forests to sell timber in illegal markets.

They returned home, but have had to start from scratch.Gradually regained crops of coffee and bread catch. Many had silver for chemical inputs bit and although it is very wasteful, fought against it manually. Unknowingly, they were synchronizing with the demands of the international coffee market: they were cultivating an organic product.

In 2008, the  Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)  installed Ranger Families program to encourage the substitution of illicit crops and invited members of Ecol-Sierra Network to participate.

This association was created in 1997 by coffee farmers Cienaga and Santa Marta who began growing organic coffee. After joined members of  Aracataca and Foundation .

Victor Cordero, farmer, son of settlers and legal representative of Ecol-Sierra that UNODC sought them out because his organization had already won in 2002 and 2005 seals and certifications of organic coffee and fair trade. For Julian Ruiz, manager Banexport, "dual certification was something demanded by the international market and it seemed impossible to find , " but through Colombia Green learned of the  Ecol-Sierra Red  and since 2008 became his business partner .

As with all commodities, coffee prices are constantly fluctuating. The harvest in the Sierra is from October to March, and it is impossible to predict how much will be worth when it listed on the stock market. Sometimes it is good, some not so. So it became imperative to diversify the local economy, because despite soil fertility, it is very difficult to carry perishable products by transportation difficulties. It started with the production of honey and so far, the results have been very good.

" Ecol-Sierra  provided technical assistance and inputs for the production of honey. For each hive, it had to plant 100 trees. So the economy is diversified and is working on the restoration of the timberland that had been felled years ago , "says Emel Yaruro, president of Asoprodesa.

To comply with the  Victims Law , the Government had to design programs to generate rural and urban employment and thus support the self - sustainability of the victims. Foundation, Magdalena, was one of the targeted municipalities because there one of the highest figures in the country was recorded: 46,433 displaced and 20,762 hectares of land abandoned, according to information provided by the Project Land Protection and Heritage. Since 2014 efforts were complemented went ahead Rural We are a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Labour. They have served 320 families victims of the conflict in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta: 190 Sacramento and 130 in Minca, one district of the capital of Magdalena also not escaped the guerrilla presence or the paramilitary attack. And they have invested 2,100 million pesos in sustainable livestock production lines, coffee and honey.

In this scenario they have focused on improving the capabilities of farmers on issues such as the characterization of cup-a coffee- assessment methodology and improving post-harvest processes. To achieve this they have acquired despulpadoras, mills, marquees drying and fermentation technology to improve on all farms. All this with the idea of reaching the highest international standards with a raw material that is recognized as top quality.

Asoprodesa  is determined to overcome what has been done so far. They are not content with selling coffee in the green state or parchment (dry) and found that purpose the support of UNDP. Tecnificarse want to overcome the border of the crop and go through the process that leads them to improve fermentation, drying and roasting, up to the packaging and sale to the final consumer.

In that way and have have also prepared financially and executed a project that will adecuaron a house, a center of agribusiness and designed labels for coffee and honey. "With UNDP have learned that beekeeping is not only honey, but also has industrial uses, such as waxes , " says  Diana Quintero, Secretary of Asoprodesa.

But besides plans and dreams, there are also several limitations to circumvent. One is that in  Sacramento  there is only solar panels and no ability to install a toaster. For now, you have to send grain to Santa Marta for toasting. That means freight costs for more than four hours through almost all thermal floors of the Sierra Nevada.

Agritourism is another bet to boost the self - sustainability of the victims, especially for Minca because there potential: it is very close to  Santa Marta , there are pre-Hispanic, coffee furniture nineteenth century, landscapes, coffee and honey roads.

Ana Delia settlers Becerra is the daughter of Norte de Santander and Eskandia owns a coffee farm that is also a hostel. He said, laughing, that was dedicated to organic farming since 1998 because she had been widowed and though his land, had no money to buy all chemicals.

"The coffee grew and the Coffee Committee I spoke of that draft organic. To become certified have played chemical clean earth for three years and I already had that time. So I could link me to the EcolSierra Red ". Ana Delia will be benefited in the next phase of Rural are an ecological stove for eco-tourism project.

In  the Sierra Nevada l lueve coffee in the field, they fall downpours cassava and although no tea, no honey itself. The varieties of Arabica coffees, cleaning traceability confirmed with organic and fair trade stamps, Beekeeping and agritourism, are efforts that are part of the sustainable use of resources and that undoubtedly will improve the lives of the victims of the highest coastal mountain in the world.

Magdalena coffee farms unionized in Red Ecolsierra bet you develop an agrotourism and ecotourism in the rural area taking advantage of all the biodiversity that exists in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the benefits of organic coffee grown there.

According to Victor Cordero Ardila, Director of the Network of Ecological Producers of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (Ecolsierra), the association has spent 15 years advances in a third strategic plan that will allow you to visualize a future with a broad and positive horizon on the subject tourist.

He explained that RedEcolsierra is an association of small producers that shelters about 425 unionized families in 23 grassroots groups distributed in the four coffee municipalities that have the Sierra Nevada (Santa Marta, Cienaga, Aracataca and Foundation) and make the coffee belt Magdalena department.

The union executive also said the magdalenense territory has cultivated 22,000 hectares of coffee from a coffee belt of 80,000 hectares. He said the association has 6,000 hectares, of which 2,000 are already certified organic standards and also bet on other alternatives from strategic plans.

Moreover, Cordero acknowledged that although the Sierra Nevada only one crop a year unlike the coffee axis is given, that gives it a valuable features as a marketing strategy to sell the product but also constitutes a disadvantage from the point of view of cash flow for the families that depend on this unique production.

.He argued that in recent years have focused efforts towards seeking organic certification to add value to coffee considering that the average planted per hectare ranges from 4500 to 5000 plants. This certification has allowed for special stamps that facilitate market entry of the European Economic Community, the United States and Japan

Thanks to the investments that have been made on farms throughout these 15 years we are working on two strategic lines 2021, one is the farm holidays and the other is ecotourism. We recently signed an agreement with the United Nations and will develop a pilot in Santa Marta and Cienaga other locations to take advantage of the coffee farms, '' said Cordero.

The solar energy company in Santa Marta Ecosolar installed the first solar power plant injected into the conventional electricity grid, as explained Angelo Peralta, manager of the company in the city.

"Ecosolar is a company in the renewable energy sector is the only company in the city and we are currently providing solutions for system not connected to the network and injected into the network systems. Our services are aimed at the city, industry and trade residential group ".

He added that "we just installed the first floor fed into the grid, which is installed in the city, he settled in the company Red Ecolsierra are 6 kW injected into the network that will generate 80 percent of consumption that is currently having that company. "

ÁNGELO PERALTA, GERENTE de Ecosolar en la sede de Ecolsierra

during installation of the first plant of its kind in the city.

LATEST TECHNOLOGY

Said the manager of the entity that "this is a plant of latest technology, with solar panels of 230 watts, with all international certifications and is approved by the technical standard electrical Colombian, an investor who has the ability to deliver real-user information of the generation that is delivering the plant, how much energy is being consumed and how much is being poured to the network ".

Likewise he informed that you can display power consumption through a platform that can be followed on his cell phone and the plant has the ability to inform the user when it have some kind of problem. "

The plant is installed in the Logistics Industrial Park, Km 3 via a Gaira, "there are facilities Ecolsierra Red where there is a solar array of 25 panels with inverter, we bidirectional counter to reverse power if you are not consuming, conventional power grid. "

INJECTED TO THE NETWORK

This solar energy is injected into the conventional electricity grid, "what we do is that energy generated by solar panels through an inverter that converts the DC power to C, we injected directly into the electrical circuit that currently has the company generating more energy. "

"The pattern is that as we are closer to the switchboard, to that extent the energy that is injected will be taken by the teams who are demanding loads, if a surplus that can not generate the solar plant is needed, that energy It is to take the power grid Electricaribe. "

He clarified that also depending on the size of the plant and power generation, "that percentage is which one will discount the consumer currently has, therefore speak with this plant just installed, we are generating 80 percent of total consumption can be Ecolsierra Network company, which is a cooperative of coffee growers in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and through this cooperative market their product. "

"These farmers have access to the benefits that gives them the Cooperative, in the sense that install them isolated system, because there we have arrived with our solar silvers today the company that distributes the electrical power can not do it, either by distance and because they are hard to reach areas, so we give energy with solar plants 24 hours a day, "he said.

The analysis performed on the honey bee Apis mellifera, it was possible to define that some compounds differentiate this area with respect to other regions of the country, ie honeys from other sectors do not have the same combination of compounds.

The features found possible to improve the position of this natural product on the market and create a marketing abroad.

Research by an interdisciplinary group of different graduate programs of the UN, with the academic support of the Institute of Science and Food Technology (ICTA), is framed in a project Colciencias that seeks to generate value added in the production chain, so beekeepers can earn more income.
